Direction-Sense is a building block game that combines graphics, numbers and colours. It enhances recognition ability of children and stimulates the hippocampus inside the brain of Alzheimer’s patients through an interaction between children and elderlies.
2014 Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, John O’Keefe, May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser discovered the construction of brain cells positioning system that bettered medical science’s understanding of Alzheimer’s disease. This study has helped people understand how the brain creates spatial maps of the surrounding environment, produces nerve cells coordinate systems, and positions and finds the path.
Based on this research, an interactive tabletop game for children and the elderlies is created. Setting up obstacles sets up the spatial possibilities, and along with digital colours and graphics that are used to find corresponding blocks, the stacks create routes, thus training children’s cognitive abilities and rehabilitate the Alzheimer patient’s brain hippocampus. This game does not only train the brain and delay the aging process, it also enhances the interaction between different generations.
How it works:
Step 1: Select the start and end point.
Step 2: Place obstacles to increase the difficulty of the game.
Step 3: Throw the three dices to determine the puzzle route.
Step 4: The first dice determines the shape of the puzzle.
The subsequent dices determine the colour and number.
Step 5: A space is constructed. Enjoy the game.
Chaoyang University of Technology
Chaoyang University of Technology (CYUT) was founded in 1994 by Dr. Tien-Sheng Yang, in memory of his parents and with the goal of educating elites. CYUT is located at Wufong, near Taichung City, a highly cultivated district. The foundation of the university’s research and teaching that has been developed on the unity and harmony of Chaoyang people and CYUT will continue to reform its curriculum and teaching methods.
The College of Design was founded in August, 1997. It is a college with emphasis on creative thinking and the integration of technology. It consists of four departments and two graduate institutes, namely, the Department of Architecture (that houses the Master’s & PhD programmes in architecture and urban design), the Department of Visual Communication Design, the Department and Graduate Institute of Industrial Design, and the Department of Landscape and Urban Design.
The main goals of this college are to cultivate students into people with spirits of humanity, professional ethics, knowledge in global trend, and aesthetic creativity in both practical and theoretical aspects. The college also seeks to strengthen inter-university academic cooperation, holds academic symposia and encourages students to gain practical training.
The College of Design prides itself in keeping abreast of the industry’s needs as an essential component in providing students with rigorous training and relevant skills for their professional success. In addition, the Creative Design Center and Technology Development Center for Design and Product Innovation were established as a multidisciplinary platform for government-university-industry collaborations.
